Using the office politics

this approach requires the most of you, if earlier when using the “get it” approach you were nominated for an Oscar, this approach is one step above –it’s Oscar winning performance.as it combines the two approaches from before “ask for it” and “get it”.

Once again there are few ways to use this approach and we’ll deal with each and everyone of it. Using this approach is usually done when you know for sure that your company won’t give you any money without drastic measurements from your part or that you need a backup plan for the “Ask for it” approach.

One way to use this approach is actually to look for a new place; by doing so you are getting a contract and having real evidence to your wishes to leave. After you have your contract go directly to your supervisor and asks for more money as you know you deserve it (key word here is “know” and not “think” as this will empower your wish), as you know the company and the management and knows you need to show them you are serious about your request you will let them know about the other opposite offer you have by showing it to them (that’s why it’s always better to have it and not just tell you have it).

Try to show your current management you’re disappointed and that others appreciate you and your advantages (don’t forget to state them, as we discussed in previous article why it’s important to have a “do” list)-again this is to empower your position.

win-win situation

At this point you are in a win-win situation.if your current office offers you better terms you’ll stay there, if the “new place” contract is still better than the current office’s offer you can always leave and start working there; in any case you have upgraded your salary.

The other way to use office politics and your Oscar winning performance is when you want to leave the office and you wish to upgrade the salary offers from other places.

At that moment you still have your current office so you still being paid so you don’t’ have to worry about being paid at the end of the month. When you state a salary in a job interview always ask something that is higher than your current one as your wish is to upgrade it.

opposite side thinks it’s too much and lowers you?

I’m not going to deal with your math and decision and if the lower offer suits you or not, as this won’t be the office politics way, as our motto in such cases is “upgrade as much as you can”.

Now back to the office politics way, when the other side gives you an offer that is lower don’t be shy, tell them that you disappointed and state your professional advantages and why you are the perfect for the position (you were accepted there for you state why you are perfect and not why you are a perfect candidate!) and that you are going to put every minute in the position you was sure they’ll understand it and give you what you have requested.

statistics gives you 3 trys before you are out

Other office management most likely will offer you a better “final offer” , examine it if it’s still doesn’t seems right for you play it hard.

2nd try

As the 2nd try happens you are holding an improved “last offer” and a request to call and inform them tomorrow about your decision. This is your last chance to play it hard, in case you are afraid to lose the “last offer” you can agree to it, but if you have the balls for it, it’s time to play it hard little bit more for the very last time.

Your future employer asks you to call and update him about your decision– don’t call, as you play hard and it’s time for “a cat and a mouse” game, as you didn’t call them back they’ll call you after a day, in such case you should tell them you still don’t have an answer as you really want to work there (again state their advantages over others) but you still need more time to think about the new offer.

try to let them know you want more money as they still didn’t give you as much (or closer) amount to what you have asked. Tell them you’ll call them back in 1–2 more days. Now is the tricky part, if they want you.

they’ll call after 2 days, but if not you’ll call them on the 3rd day and say you really hope they could think about something and come towards you and maybe the final offer can be tweak little bit.

Most chances you’ll get it your way and will get an improved really final offer – it doesn’t mean you get exact what you want but you improved the original offer 2 times, and now it’s up to you to decide.

Conculsion

When we come to upgrade ourselves we have to remember that playing hard can turn into our disadvantages – as using the above tactics if you don’t play it correctly and understand the other side act might leave you with invalid offer.

The management always try to pay less and get more as opposite to employees who wants to do less and get more, reading the cards right and having the right hand sure helps us get what we want.
