Using office politics to upgrade your salary – part 1

This arti­cle deals with the usage of the office pol­i­tics in order to upgrade your salary. It’s not a secret that the real job in the office (and it doesn’t mat­ter which office) is to upgrade our salary– some peo­ple might want to upgrade their posi­tion as well but in the bot­tom line it’s all about the money as this is they key fac­tor to our sur­vival in the every­day mod­ern life.

Salary upgrade can be achieved in few ways, as some of them require your act­ing skills and some of them require your office tac­tics sur­vival techniques.

There are 3 sim­ple options to man­age your way and find the path for your salary upgrade, take in mind that some­times when you are using one option and hav­ing a neg­a­tive answer it doesn’t block you from using other options, but if you won’t act cor­rectly you might find your­self look­ing for a job for real.

The 3 sim­ple options are:

ask for it, get it, and use your office politics,

in the first arti­cle I’ll describe the “ask for it” approach and how you can use it into your advantage.

Ask for it

the sim­ple of them all and the one that requires less act­ing or office pol­i­tics skills from you, the only thing you must require is to work in the same position/office with­out a raise for a year or so.

Every­one of us wants to upgrade our salaries and in our mind we deserve this as we are the best suit­able per­son for the job; salary upgrade in this approach can be done in few ways, as some places hold annual salary con­ver­sa­tion with the employee (it doesn’t mean your salary will be upgrade but you have a chance to be heard).

Some­times the man­age­ment wishes to upgrade your salary due to achieve­ments or progress in work , in this case they’ll inform you about the salary change, but most chances are that man­age­ment won’t do a thing and wait. |Wait­ing is a habit of man­agers, if you don’t come and ask for more money there is no need to give you more, in this case as I stated ear­lier you have to hold the same posi­tion for a year a so before you are mak­ing your move, when you think the time is right go ahead and ask for it. As this approach doesn’t requires any usage of skills there is only one tac­tic you have to take in mind:

 empower, empower, empower,

by doing so you show man­age­ment how worth you are and why it’s worth for them to upgrade your salary.

How to empower yourself?

this is a sim­ple job sim­ply state facts and progress you have done dur­ing the last year or so, as it’s hard to ignore facts (in worst case you’ll be given an answer that the com­pany doesn’t have any extra money but it’s always good to try). The only thing you need to remem­ber is what you have been done in the last year there­fore there is one prepa­ra­tion you’ll have to do and that is writ­ing things up.

Dur­ing your work write a small sum­mary of things you did, lead, achieved – this list will be used in the annual hear­ings and when you’ll pro­vide your facts (the “do” list is a good idea just to remem­ber things you did,

even if you don’t plan to ask for a raise). If your posi­tion was upgraded but your salary kept the same, don’t be shy state this fact as well. There are all kind of ways to get upgrade our salary, but not every office sur­vivor has the needed skills for that, there­fore we have to use what we have. When you try to sur­vive the office it doesn’t really mean you have all the needed strength of a sur­vival but hav­ing at least some of them could really make your life in the office much easier.
