Office Politics-Beware of Free launch

The sit­u­a­tion now days seem to be very volatile. Empire com­pa­nies fall and the ones that sur­vive are the ones that kept some money and didn’t spend it.

It seems how­ever, that man­ager likes to play on that issue. There is a good chance find your­self in a com­pany meet­ing where all employ­ees were invited to the “monthly meet­ing “which was never monthly.

You can feel in the air that some­thing is wrong, and the look of your fel­low com­rades approve your feel­ing. Yes, you are going to earn less when this meet­ing ends.

There are two kinds of man­agers: the smart ones and the dumb. either way you are going to lose money, but lets describe the dif­fer­ences between these two, just to list the indi­ca­tors hat are pre­lim­i­nary to the “sur­pris­ing” (or not) announce­ment that they cut your salary.

So, the dumb ones might not gather a meet­ing at all. You will hear from other employ­ees, which heard that from oth­ers. And you won’t believe it until the pay check comes.

The smart ones are mas­ters in “office-politics”. They are not “the boss” by acci­dent. It toke them years to reach their posi­tion and they had their share in office pol­i­tics games. They are play­ers in office sur­vivors after all.

So, what a smart boss do when he wants to deliver bad news-bad for you, not for him-trust me, he earn more so cut­ting the same per­cent­age from both of you wont effect him at all-you on  the other hand fell it hard. And its hurt.

Again, what he do– well if you didn’t guess so far-(you might train your­self in the office pol­i­tics games more)-he bring you all,  to a big happy lunch. All lunch expenses are on the com­pany. He smiles to every­body, make jokes, and say good things on everybody-an office sur­vivor rule set. This sit­u­a­tion doesn’t give you a lot — so you need to eat. At least you can order some expen­sive meal-after all, it on the com­pany expenses.

After every­body fin­ished eating-then the boss brings you the bad news. Some­thing like:

The board decided to cut 10% from each employee due to the reces­sion in the world, low num­ber of sales.….

See, he blames the board for this deci­sion. He was against it all along but alas– he can’t do much when the board tells him, Right?  He is on con­tract like all of you. You are all in the same prob­lem. His 10% is yours 10%.Basically he implies you are all equal.

To sweet the sour pill he sug­gest this is only tem­po­rally state. If there will be more sales in the next-lets say 6 months. Then all of us will get back the money we just lost. In addi­tion, every­one is required to add an extra min­i­mal time of 1 hour –that mean they just increased you time at the office, by decreas­ing the money you get back. Per­fect, and about get­ting back after six months. Usu­ally they will reach it and either says we didn’t sell much. We need to keep this state 6 months more-Or they will tell you its very hard to cal­cu­late whether we reach our goal and it takes 6 months to know it. .sophis­ti­cated office pol­i­tics games – they are using excuses like the employ­ees can’t tell between junk and true.

Now, if you think about, this is a very prob­lem­atic issue. When you first got hired, you had a nego­ti­a­tion on the hourly/monthly/yearly salary. The amount is kept secret between you two .in addi­tion, you don’t “know” what your friends in the office earns also,-they might get more or less. This is the cap­i­tal­ist way right?

But when it comes to cut down, they act like com­mu­nist society-we are all alike-so let’s cut 10% to everybody-no mat­ter how much he gains in the begin­ning. THIS is not cap­i­tal­ist way!

So, you get the news on full stom­ach, and you feel less angry. That’s exactly what your boss intends. Good job Boss– you proved you know how to be a mas­ter mind in office politics.

Before we con­clude, pay atten­tion to the office envi­ron­ment in the next few months. You will see , sur­pris­ingly  arrival  of new employ­ees (from which money– they just cut and cry that they don’t have– oh yours)., you stay more at work because there are more projects to handle-more project mean more cus­tomers mean more money right?

What else need to be done? You go home, think about it. Talk to your relatives-it’s very impor­tant to tell them that because it affects them also. And you start plan­ning your actions.
