Office politics and the promotion techniques

As an office survivor you have to act now in order to survive tomorrow

This strong sentence implement the need to use tactics in the office in order to survive, as after all only the strong survive and the weak find themselves looking for another place.

This article deals with a situation you want to secure your job by making your boss “thinks” there isn’t enough man power. This tactics works in a small office environment which isn’t controlled tight by the supervisor.

An office survivor always knows how to deal with situations, as in a small office without a lot of work, you can find yourself doing your work and spending most of the day browsing the internet or upgrading your social networking skills.

This is the time you need to do something, but what?

As it always nice not to work so much during the day you ask yourself what can be better; the answer is very simple – be a boss, as there are 2 ways to do it:

  1. your supervisor will notice that there is a lot of work and as much as you try there are always leftovers – this article isn’t about this as stated earlier , there isn’t a lot of work.
  2.  You will create the opportunity and take a promotion – yes take, as you create the needed situation. Why to create a situation? Well as an office survivor master of the office politics you know that the dream job you were thinking you’ll have is only a dream, and as much as the office is nice your entire resume is all doll.

You need to spice it up and what is better than having a nice leading position. The situation in the office is very simple, it’s a small office, there isn’t tight supervision on processes and there isn’t a lot of work; a thing you know but never show it to your supervisor as he might determine this position.

Simple start to make tasks stand aside while making yourself working on them, after 3–4 days, start to work and free some of the tasks that were in the queue from the 1st day and continue with small tasks here and there.

A week pass your tasks queues starts to get long – but it’s doesn’t imitate you as you know that in a day or two you can do it all by yourself, now it’s a good time to go to your boss and start telling him about all the pressure at work. If you get lucky your boss will agree that an additional man power is needed , at this point try to push him the idea you need someone your without experience in order to shape him to what the company needs, so he could contribute fast.

If you aren’t lucky and your boss disagree, continue with process you started and get back to him after 4–5 days and start this story again… after 2–3 times of complain cycle, your boss will eventually agree to hire a person as you need; this step actually inserts you into the recruit process as you define the needs and experience and finally at the end you’ll get someone who’ll be under you.

The problem as it might seems might start when the new employee comes, how can you work less now , if you have someone to supervise all the time? Very simple, tutor him very slow, don’t tell him everything as he should make some mistakes and needs your help– there is no need to accuse him as he new and he is defined as you want, pass all the assignment to him and make yourself working, by this you can preserve your position and even take yourself a promotion without waiting for it.

a very important rule is to find better in good, which means if your young employee comes with a solution to a problem look at it, examine it, so it will be seen you are working , and once a while tell him there are better solution and give a little tip so he could start think about it.

So you take a promotion on yourself, it wasn’t that hard, but once again it only works in specific places and situation, the only benefits for an office survivor like yourself from this situation is upgrade in your position.

As you still do hands on job from time to time (just to show everyone else) with advise and consulting to the young employee in case of layoffs who is better to lay , someone who knows it all from top to bottom or someone who has just comes and still get advise from others. Remember it’s all about surviving and office politics, after all if you won’t do it, there will be someone else who will.
