Office cliques

As time pass by you notice there are cliques in the office, the only question you have to ask yourself is which clique suits you the best, which one will allow you to survive, which will give you more power, which will be better for you , etc..
Previous articles talked about finding the right mentor or how to turn company’s meetings into your advantages, but in order to survive you need more than that, as company’s meetings allows you to associate yourself with the big guys so they will know who you are and recognize you as a force in the office. The clique allows you to survive in with the internal politics in the office as most of your job is under your direct boss and not under the CEO.
Look at your mentor, watch which people he has a clique with and try to get along with them in order to gain some internal power. If your mentor is a lone wolf don’t worry, simply turn your connection into a mini clique, people around you will notice this mini-clique and soon will try to join, as your mentor is a lone wolf he won’t allow it to happen – in that case you’ll have to make all the decisions by yourself while letting others thinks it’s your mentor way.
After all who are they going to listen the new guy (you) or the sophisticated veteran (your mentor). In the case of lone wolf mentor you must be very carefull that your mentor won’t find out this act by yours as he might retaliate and it will be quick and powerful. If you didn’t find a mentor or your mentor is lone wolf and people knows that don’t worry – as a true office survivor this is an easy task for you , all you have to do is observe the others and study.
Look at the weak , the rejected , the new ones that came in the same time (more or less) with you and activate your charm on them. Remember as an office survivor your mission is one and only to survive, there are all kind of tactics to do that as described in other articles and will be discuss in the future, but if you don’t have a clique your days in the office might be numbered the moment a new management comes.
