Interview’s question — what’s your long term plan

The time has come and you decide to move to a new bigger office. The question that you’ll be asked is where do you see yourself in 5 years from now (or any other variation of that question) – remember this question is a tricky one that will allow you to survive in a new environment.

The answer depends on the position you are seeking:

  1. Technical position – in this case, you should state the desire to be more technical and study more, work more with the “hands” (I wrote , I implement , I develop , etc..), don’t emphasize any new for higher management as this will conflict the technical position you are interview for.
  2. Management position – in this case, you should emphasize your future desires to take a part in the management team , to get high in levels at the office, don’t emphasize all your technical experience as in those positions it’s more important to emphasize your management experience (I managed , I supervised , I lead …)

Remember as times change and in a recession it’s not always clear where you’ll be in a week from now, this kind of question (“Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”) is for one reason only – to see your vision and your path of progress and allows your supervision knows you know where you are planning.
