few things that come up my mind, in the describes example:
1. find out why did the bank decides to close the project - this allows you ways to deal with the meeting with your boss ,and show him that there other ways to do than closing the project , the bank might want a small change and you can convince your boss that small change is better than having no project.

2. find out if the bank itself has positions that might suits you - once again this will come to your advantages , as you know the job and people so switching from one company to the other but doing the same position allows you 100% fitting right on the start.

3. convince the bank (in case step 2 fails) that what it needs in order to success is to have someone like you and to create this position just for you - at this case you might want to convince the bank that the require position is needed and without somoene doing it, the bank will seek solutions to problems you can prevent.

in both cases (2 and 3) if you manage to get the same position at the bank the meeting with the boss should be fast and easy, you have the cards, and it's your full house and not his.
